To determine the required cable thickness, the following formula can be used:

Current (Ampere) x distance (meter) x 0.2 = cable cross-section in mm²

Example 1: A battery charger of 30 Ampere is located 2.5 meters from the battery. The calculation is then 30 x 2.5 x 0.2 = 15 mm². Since 15 mm² is not a standard size, you choose the next larger size, in this case 16 mm².

Example 2: An inverter of 450 Watt on a 12 Volt battery, placed 3 meters away. The calculation is 450 W / 12 V = 37.5 A; then 37.5 A x 3 m x 0.2 = 22.5 mm². Here you choose the next larger size, namely 25 mm².
